Lethbridge is a multi-faceted, multi-cultural city, with a lot going on and a lot around it, which is a big part of why I enjoy living here so much. Unfortunately, it can also be difficult to be on top of it all. Now I’m not claiming this to be an exhaustive list, however in the areas of community development and support, cultural connection, local history, reconciliation, and recreation, I hope to have curated a comprehensive collection.
Community
- Downtown Lethbridge BRZ – Established in 1987, the Downtown Lethbridge Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) is a visionary collective of business leaders who believe that the heart of the city beats in its centre core.
- Imagine Lethbridge – born in 2020 from a deep need to rethink how we measure success and well-being in our city, in response to growing concerns around community health, housing insecurity, health disparities, environmental sustainability, and growing inequality.
- Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge – The Lethbridge Kinsmen Club chartered in 1928 and is a diverse group of men from all ages and backgrounds comitted to serving the community’s greatest need.
- Lethbridge ICA – Integrated Coordinated Access (ICA) is a network that helps people get to the programs and services that they need in the quickest way possible, supporting the health and wellbeing of all community members.
- Lethbridge Kinette Club – A diverse group of women engaging in community service, fun and fellowship.
- Lethbridge Men’s Shed – Men’s Sheds are groups of men who get together in their community to develop new skills, discover new interests, and make new friends. Symbolic of that backyard workshop where men share stories and tinker with woodworking or electronics, a Men’s Shed is grounded in the idea that men communicate more effectively when they’re “shoulder to shoulder” with other men.
- Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs (SACPA) – Founded in 1967 with the rationale that the strength of a political democracy is lodged in the freedom of citizens to assemble and freely discuss ideas and issues. SACPA seeks to promote a sense of community and citizenship amongst the public. It is strictly non-partisan in its political outlook and encourages the expression of divergent viewpoints.
Culture
- Blackfoot Resource Hub – Connecting people with traditional Blackfoot ways of knowing, guided by Elders and knowledge holders who have preserved the sacred voices and practices of our ancestors.
- German Canadian Club Lethbridge – Since 1958 the club promotes activities for anyone seeking a connection with German culture.
- Lethbridge and Area Métis Association – Awareness, visibility, and support for the Métis community through cultural programming, advocacy, and access to culturally relevant services.
- Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden – Established during Canada’s Centennial in 1967, Nikka Yuko was built to recognize contributions made by citizens of Japanese ancestry to the multicultural community of Lethbridge, Alberta, and as a symbol of international friendship.
- Romulus & Remus Italian Canadian Cultural Centre – Since 1977, the Italian Canadian Club’s mandate is to promote and foster an appreciation of the Italian Language, culture and food for the benefit of all its members and the public.
- Sik Ooh Kotoki Friendship Society – A non-profit organization to support and strengthen Indigenous cultural distinctiveness, that envisions an improved quality of life for Indigenous people in the urban community.
- Southern Alberta Ethnic Association – A not for profit organization with charitable status that represents a wide diversity of ethnic societies and clubs in southern Alberta, since 1977.
History
- Fort Whoop-Up – Tells the story of the buffalo robe, the 19th century fur trade, and all the folks who called the Oldman River Valley home over the centuries. The Fort offers unique interactive experiences, authentic stories, and a glimpse back to Alberta’s founding history; learn about Southwestern Alberta’s amazing past though the viewpoints of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) Metis, and early settlers.
- Galt Museum & Archives – The regional museum for southern Alberta. Located in Lethbridge, the Galt provides historical information on the human history of the area from Blackfoot culture, to coal mining, to regional breweries; there is something here for everyone!
- Lethbridge Genealogy Society – A non-profit community organization that was founded with the objective to provide encouragement and resources to those interested in genealogical research.
- Lethbridge Historical Society – Serving the area from Nanton south to the United States border, the Lethbridge branch of the Historical Society of Alberta offers opportunities to get involved with local history, and was first formed in 1988 as a Scientific and Historical Society.
Reconciliation
- Circles for Reconciliation – The aim of Circles for Reconciliation is to establish trusting, meaningful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples as part of the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). I’m a trained faciliatator for Circls for Reconciliation! If you’re interested in hosting a Circle, please reach out!
- Reconciliation Education – is acclaimed online course, 4 Seasons of Reconciliation has helped many Canadians to start their Reconciliation journey, educating them on the true history of Canada and highlighting the importance of reconciliation for a better future for everyone.
- Reconciliation Lethbridge – Formally created in 2018 to act as an advisory body to City Council on issues relating to reconciliation, as well as to advance reconciliation initiatives within the broader community.
Recreation
- Horns Recreation – Horns Recreation is committed to providing health and wellness as a lifestyle choice for all members of our community. The Co-op Centre for Sport & Wellness provides gymnasia, fitness centre, indoor running track, climbing wall, and steam room facilities.
- Lethbridge Parks, Leisure & Recreation – Arenas & Skating, Community Play Boxes, Event Permits, Facility Bookings, Fee Assistance Program, Mighty Neighbour, Parks & Playgrounds, Parks & Recreation News, Recreation & Culture Guide, Swimming & Pools, Trails & Pathways.
- Lethbridge Sport Council – Lethbridge Sport Council provides leadership and a collective voice for sport in Lethbridge, offering quality sport experiences to all and attracting, creating, and retaining sport tourism opportunities for Lethbridge.
- YMCA of Lethbridge – Proudly one of the top three largest YMCAs in North America, featuring a 50,000 sqft. Aquatic Centre, Fitness Centre with 240m indoor running track, Fieldhouse with 3 Gymnasiums/ 6 Courts, and an Indoor Playspace.
